Live in the UK?? Got a Touchpad?? Notice the Kindle app is missing?? Follow my step-bt-step to get Kindla Beta on the Touchpad.
So a lot of you may be coming to WebOS for the first time, so welcome!
Now, at time of writing the UK app catalog still doesn’t have a Kindle app but the USA does fortunately!  So the question is how do we get this killer app on to our UK TouchPads? This is where the beauty of the homebrew community comes in!
  1. First you need to download the Kindle ipk - try http://www.uploadstation.com/file/588bNfZ/
  2. Next you need to grab a copy of WebOS Quick install from here
  3. Enable dev mode on your touchpad by going to the ‘Just Type’ Search bar and typing in this:upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart
  4. Launch WebOS Quick Install and make sure you install the ‘novacom’ drivers (this lets quickinstall talk to your TouchPad)
  5. In Quick Install, click the '+' on the right side, then select the Kindle ipk.
  6. Click Install
  7. Reboot the Touchpad & Enjoy :)
You now have Kindle!

  1. Installing takes a while doesn't it? I got it all connected but it has been installing for about 10 minutes. Is that right?

  2. Unknown says:

Should only take a few min. Mine was done in about 4min

  3. Thanks, I have preware installed and after downloading on my touchpad it installed straight away and is working.
Less than 5 minutes start to finish.

  4. Steve says:

mine won't install - just states that it cannot open mime type.....anyone got any ideas how I can solve this??

  5. maxsec says:

the downloads need to be done on a PC/Mac. Webos Quickinstall is the used to copy the file kindle ipk from the PC to the Touchpad.

  6. Steve says:

OK - now worked out this needs to be installed on my PC!!

All up & running with transfer - 15 mins so far but still installing - this is the 2nd attempt...

Taking the dog for a walk now - lets see if its done when I get back.

  7. Steve says:

OK - still nothing after nearly an hour.

I've followed ALL the instructions above & all drivers are installed (Win 7 32bit) but its still "installing" - anyone got any clues as to why its hanging please?

  8. Boz0ne says:

    I've had the same problem.
My Touchpad was purchased in France.
I have played with configuration settings to set everything to English, still no joy.
Running Ubuntu on the PC. Quick install transfers then install never completes. Then tried Quick install under Windows 7 and it hangs after the novacom driver installation. Maybe those who have suceeded should detail the PC OS used.

    Another question :
    - does anyone know how the HP App store knows our location if the GPS localizing is off?
    - IP address?
    - MAC address?
I am an American living in France and I find it very frustrating not to have access to all apps.

  9. Steve says:

Also noticed that once the quickinstall is running its almost impossible to stop it -believing its been stopped mid-install.

Like BozOne I've tried taking off the location services but I guess it knows from the IP what our location is even if it's only to work out its in the UK & not the US!

  10. Hi,
I've (apparently) installed the kindle beta app on my UK touchpad OK, but it's not sychronising with my amazon account, that is it's not finding my books. Is this as far as the beta version goes or have I missed a trick?

  11. Oh please, just ignore me :O)
It helps if you use the right account...
    ...smacks head on keyboard.

  12. Steve says:

    OK - got it !!!

    Look at http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hp-touchpad-setup-guide-part-1-speed-tablet-preware-homebrew-patches-webos/

When you attach the USB cable DO NOT go into USB drive mode - just close the dialogue box & carry on - it worked for me!!

  13. Manu says:

Thank you very much. I was able to install it as per instructions! Hopefully Amazon releases an app formally to prevent heartburn!!

  14. You know what's really funny - the whole thing is based on the location you enter as part of your "Palm Profile".

I have two palm profiles - one that is set to location "UK", the other to "US". If I set up the Touchpad with the UK profile, no sign of the Kindle App in the AppCatalog - set it up using the US profile and it's there.

This discovery made after hours of messing around with VPNs, regional settings etc.

So - make a new profile and tell it you're in the US. Kindle app available and no further messing around required. The only downside as far as I can see is that the paid apps are priced in dollars (rather than in the local currency equivalent).

  15. Joe says:

Worked first time for me, thanks for this.

  16. ebonalaw says:

@Paper Boy - Where do you change your "Palm Profile"?

  17. Thank you so much. Been trying to get Kindle app for days and days! Delighted to have it at last. What will I do with my time now tho :). B. Dublin

  18. Lee says:

Tried changing profile to US and cant see Kindle app? Am I doing something wrong?

  19. Joe says:

Wow, thanks so much. You lot are geniuses! Just to clear things up though, you need to run WebOS Quick Install from a PC, connect to your HP Touchpad (after you've put it in developer mode) and don't choose the usb option on your touchpad (just click close when asked).

Shouldn't had to have done all that though if Amazon would just release the app in the UK but thanks again!

  20. Sorry to sound stupid, but can anybody confirm this process still works for an Hp touchpad that is uptodate with updates Thanks

  21. Sridhar says:

i am from india & i confirm these steps worked perfectly for me. Thanks a lot!

    To summarize:
    a) I downloaded the kindle ipk & webos quickinstall to my windows 7 machine.
    b) I had java 1.6+ also on my win7.
    c) autorun of webos quickinstall did not work (as jar files are opened by winzip on my win7). So had to execute the command 'java -jar WebOSQuickInstall-4.3.1.jar' command from command prompt (had java in system 'PATH' variable).
    d) i reinstalled novacmd drivers (just in case).
    e) brought the touchpad to dev mode (upupdown...)
    f) touchpad asked for password for dev mode, left it blank.
    g) connected touchpad usb to win7 ('cancel' option - not to transfer files).
    h) installed kindle ipk through webos quickinstall.
i)restart touchpad to see the lovely kindle app there.
